One purpose of the Sanctuary is to encourage the return of native savanna grasses and flowers: Big Bluestem, Side Oats Grama, Indian Grass and Virginia Wild Rye provide prairie cover for ground-nesting birds to lay and hatch their chicks. Around the pond, I’ve planted native flowers Partridge Pea, Browneyed Susan, Purple Coneflowers and Illinois Bundleflower, which draw bees to gather abundant pollen and nectar.
